Virgin Group's airline business is mulling entering the Chilean market, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson said in an interview with local newspaper Diario Financiero.

In Chile, flagship carrier LAN Airlines SA (LFL, LAN.SN) dominates the industry and its imminent merger with Brazil's TAM S/A (TAM, TAMM4.BR) is expected to create the largest airline in Latin America and one of the 10 biggest in the world in terms of revenue.

Branson is in Chile to launch his telephone company Virgin Mobile into that market.

Virgin will evaluate London Heathrow slots' availability along with the airline economic viability to launch flights to Chile, Branson told the newspaper.
