Join us for a Dine & Discover hosted by Julie Gran, AIA Iowa Allied Member, of Sierra Pacific Windows on Sustainable Forestry Initiative / SFI Program

Program Description:

Architects choose wood because it's beautiful, unique, provides a natural appearance and has numerous environmental characteristics - including renewability. Many of wood's positive attributes depend, in part, on whether the forest resource is renewed. Third-party forest certification standards set by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) offers a proof point, insuring a forest has been managed considering a forest's ecosystem services including its multitude of environmental, social and economic values. Using focused research, sustainable forest techniques are used to decrease carbon sequestration, increase water conservation, and protect ecosystem biodiversity to preserve a forest's many benefits today and in the future. Well managed forests provide many other benefits, including clean air and water, habitat for wildlife, commercially valuable products like wood, and employment for local communities. This presentation reviews SFI's history, membership and the qualifications required to meet SFI Certifications. SFI principles, objectives, performance measures and indicators will be detailed. Learn more about how our forests are a mainstay of society's sustainable infrastructure.

1. Participants will learn about SFI's history, membership and the qualifications required to meet SFI Certifications.
