New consumer protection policy for Ghana
Ghana is set for a "desperately needed" new consumer protection policy which will build on previous law and reinforce rights.
When passed later this year, the bill will establish a consumer protection act (2014) and a Consumer Protection Authority (2015).
The policy drafted by the Ministry of Trade and Industry will harmonise all existing pieces of legal provisions that seek to protect the consumer and ensure fair market practices.
Onica Makwakwa, Head of CI's Africa Office said "I am glad to see that plans are moving along towards establishing a comprehensive law for consumer protection which is desperately needed in Ghana. We hope that CI Member Consumer Advocacy Centre (CAC) - Ghana will continue to play an important role in this process and that this time after the policy is approved there will be a sponsored legislation for the act to be approved."
According to Professor Goski Alabi, President of the Consumer Advocacy Centre, Ghana's consumers do not currently exercise their rights because of circumstances in the market. In the cases of unfair treatment or poor transactions, many consumers do not know where to go to report their case or receive advice.
When established, the Consumer Protection Authority will have overall responsibility for addressing issues related to consumer rights abuse.
