According to a recent study, California has the highest foreclosure rate in the country and the Riverside area ranks among the top cities in the nation for highest foreclosure rates. So what is Republican congressional candidate John Tavaglione's (CA-41) plan to address the foreclosure crisis? Nothing, that's what. When asked at a forum yesterday how he would stabilize the housing market, Tavaglione said, "We should stay out of it, in my opinion."

"With his do-nothing solution to the foreclosure crisis, John Tavaglione would fit right in with his fellow Republicans in Congress, who have failed to help struggling homeowners stay in their homes," said Amber Moon of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Riverside has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country, and its residents need a congressman who will go to bat for them in Washington, not somebody like John Tavaglione, who would sit on the sidelines and do nothing."

Background:

When Asked About Foreclosure Crisis Tavaglione Said "We Should Stay Out of It." In 2012, Tavaglione was asked what should be done about the foreclosure crisis in the region. He said "We should stay out of it in my opinion." [Riverside Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum, 25:42, 8/9/12]

Riverside Had Some of Highest Number of Homes in Foreclosure in California. A report from RealityTrac showed that Riverside had some of the highest number of homes in foreclosure in California. The state had the country's highest foreclosure rate in July, with "one in every 325" homes at risk of reverting to bank ownership. [Southern California Public Radio, 8/8/12

Tavaglione Will Join Republicans Who Voted to Shut Down Help for Homeowners to Refinance.  Tavaglione will go to Washington and join Congressional Republicans who voted to shut down a federal program established to help homeowners who owe more than their homes are worth refinance their loans. A borrower current on his mortgage would qualify for a Federal Housing Administration (FHA) refinanced loan given that the lender wrote off at least percent of the unpaid mortgage principal. The bill rescinded all unobligated funds allocated for the program under the 2008 financial industry bailout. The bill passed, 256-171. [HR 830, Vote #171, 3/10/11]

Tavaglione Will Join Republicans Who Voted Against Protecting Senior Homeowners from Being Served Foreclosure Notices. Tavaglione will go to Washington and join Congressional Republicans who voted against a measure that would have required the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to determine the amount necessary - and appropriate that amount - to provide assistance under the FHA Refinance Program to senior homeowners. The motion failed, 185-243. [HR 830, Vote #170, 3/10/11]

Tavaglione Will Join Republicans Who Voted Against Even Protecting Veterans and Active Service Members from Foreclosure. Tavaglione will go to Washington and join Congressional Republicans who voted against a measure that would have protected veterans and active service members from foreclosures. The measure required the Secretary of HUD in consultation with the Secretaries of Defense and Veterans Affairs, to determine the amount necessary to provide assistance under the Emergency Housing Act of 1975 to homeowners who are veterans or members of the Armed Forces on active duty. It would also authorize Congress to appropriate this amount of assistance to veterans and members of the Armed Forces on active duty under the Emergency Mortgage Relief Program. The motion failed, 182-238.Vote #173, 3/11/11]
