Specifically, the Commission hopes to gain a better understanding of the potential economic impact of 5G networks in new areas such as health and transport, and to gain more information about potential social benefits.

The study will be carried out over 12 months by a consortium including Tech4i2, Interdigital Europe, Trinity College Dublin and Real Wireless.

Information from the study will help stakeholders to plan for the development and future deployment of 5G, from research and development, to infrastructure investments, including the prospects for new commercial and social services. The study should also help The European Commission and regulators to plan future policy in areas such as spectrum allocation planning, the preparation of the World Radio Conferences, or future market regulation.

The study will be based on an analysis of detailed input and views from a wide range of stakeholders and potential users. To gather this information, over the coming months, the Commission will hold workshops on societal and other policy issues as well as hearings with key economic actors.
