20 March 2013

Young Video Makers from Estonia, Lithuania and Portugal win EU award

Amateur video makers from Estonia, Lithuania and Portugal took home the first, second and third prizes respectively at the 2013 Europe Past Forward awards, a video competition on the meaning of European citizenship. The award ceremony was held in Brussels on 20 March 2013 and the three lucky winners were awarded prizes of 5 000, 3 000 and 2 000 euros.

Over 130 amateur video makers from the EU's 27 Member States and Croatia (which is joining the EU in 2013) submitted entries to the Europe Past Forwardcompetition, an annual video challenge organised by the European Economic and Social Committee.

This year's competition invited young people aged between 18 and 30 to submit a clip explaining what it means to them to be a citizen of the European Union. The theme of the competition was linked to the European Year of Citizens, which seeks to promote active, informed and inclusive participation.

The shortlisted videos were selected through a system of voting open to all EU citizens. The 10 most popular videos were then submitted to a professional jury which took the final decision on which three videos would be awarded a prize. This year's three winners come from Estonia, Lithuania and Portugal, and the final ranking of the videos was announced at the award ceremony on 20th March 2013.

The winning projects (in order)

EU27 (Estonia): a film which portrays the joint efforts of EU Member States and the cooperation that exists between them. This video uses creative methods to explain the different values that are prominent across Europe.

Better together(Lithuania): a clip which shows that the European Union is a community of people, highlighting the way in which ordinary citizens see the impact of the EU in their everyday lives

What does being an EU citizen mean?(Portugal): a film about cooperation between 70 people from 8 different EU Member States, who share their thoughts and opinions about what it means to be a citizen of the European Union.

Europe Past Forwardis an annual video challenge organised by the European Economic and Social Committee. This video challenge gives young people from the EU aged 18-30 the opportunity to make their voice heard through a short video clip. The theme for the 2013 contest is linked to the European Year of Citizens, which is particularly relevant to the Committee's efforts to achieve active, informed and inclusive participation. Participants were asked to share their thoughts on what it means to them to be a citizen of the European Union. What are their values, beliefs, rights and needs? What do they think about democracy, freedom and dialogue? Have they had the opportunity to contribute and share their views and, if so, how did they make use of these opportunities?
