Suffolk County Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery of a taxi driver in North Bellport last night.

Suffolk County Police officers and the Fifth Squad responded to a call at 726 Meade Avenue in North Bellport reporting an attempted robbery of the taxi he had just fled.

The man had just entered the pre-called taxi when three unknown black males approached the vehicle. One of the men displayed a gun and demanded cash from the driver. The driver struggled with the man for the gun, while the fare fled from the back of the vehicle and called 911.

Suffolk County Police were assisted by the Canine unit and Aviation. Evidence was recovered at both locations on Meade and within the taxi. Both the driver and the fare assisted in the police investigation. The driver sustained a minor graze wound to the abdomen, but did not require medical attention.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Fifth Squad at (631) 854-8552 at or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
