UNECA - United Nations Economic Commission for Afr : Ethiopia to celebrate First African Road Safety Day

11/14/2012 | 02:45am US/Eastern

ECA Press Release 195/2012

Addis Ababa,13 November 2012 (ECA) -  The First African Road Safety Day will be celebrated in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on November 18th 2012 jointly by the Government of Ethiopia, the African Union Commission, the Economic Commission for Africa and the World Health Organization.

According to the organizers, a UN General Assembly resolution proclaimed a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020in March 2010, with a goal of stabilizing and then reducing the forecast level of road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at national, regional and global levels.

The Decade would provide a timeframe for action to encourage political and resource commitments both globally and nationally. Development Partners could use the Decade as a stimulus to integrating road safety into their assistance programs, said the organizers.

They said low-income and middle-income countries could use the Decade to accelerate the adoption of effective road safety programs while high-income countries could use it to make progress in improving their road safety performance and to share experiences and knowledge with others.

Organizers expect that the "African Road Safety Day" would be used to remember road crash victims and to raise awareness on the need to take drastic measures to improve road safety to achieve the goals set for the Decade.

High level messages will be delivered by the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport, the Mayor of Addis Ababa, the AUC, ECA and the WHO to underscore the seriousness of the scourge of road accidents in Africa, their heavy socio-economic toll and the need to exert concerted efforts to minimize them significantly.
