U.S. Stocks Pare Some Gains After New Home Sales -2-

Hancock Holding Co.'s (>> Hancock Holding Company) fourth-quarter profit more than doubled as merger-related costs weighed on the regional lender's year-ago results.

Juniper Networks Inc.'s (>> Juniper Networks, Inc.) fourth-quarter earnings edged down 0.5% as stronger router sales helped balance weaker spending on switches by some big enterprise customers. Overall, revenue from the company topped management's conservative October guidance as sales of switching platforms--often used by companies building large private data centers--slipped 6.5% in the quarter.

KLA-Tencor Corp.'s (>> KLA-Tencor Corporation) fiscal second-quarter earnings fell 3.8% as rising costs outpaced higher revenue at the semiconductor-equipment company.

Lattice Semiconductor Corp. (>> Lattice Semiconductor) swung to a fourth-quarter loss as the chip maker suffered from broad-based demand softness. Earnings results narrowly beat expectations.

An appeals court in California has tossed a portion of a nearly $310 million verdict against Mattel Inc. (>> Mattel, Inc.) in a long-running copyright-infringement lawsuit against Bratz doll maker MGA Entertainment Inc.

Microsoft Corp.'s (>> Microsoft Corporation) fiscal second-quarter earnings slipped 3.7% as the software giant reported weaker sales in its business and entertainment divisions, though revenue in its core Windows business strengthened. Shares of Microsoft slipped 2.1% to $27.06 after hours.

ResMed Inc.'s (RMD, RMD.AU) second-quarter earnings rose 24% as the respiratory-device maker's revenue jumped, particularly in the Americas. Results beat Street expectations.

Sonic Corp. (>> Sonic Corporation) said its President Scott McLain will resign, effective March 31, and his title will be assumed by Chairman and Chief Executive Cliff Hudson.

Starbucks Corp.'s (>> Starbucks Corporation) profit jumped 13% in the latest quarter, propelled by higher sales in the U.S. and even China, where others have stumbled lately. Global same-store sales improved 6%, ahead of expectations of 5.4% growth from analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. Shares were up 2.6% to $56 after hours.

Moody's Investors Service has boosted the outlook for Valmont Industries Inc. (>> Valmont Industries, Inc.) to positive from stable, citing improved profitability over the past year and expectations of moderate global growth.

VeriSign Inc.'s (>> Verisign, Inc.) fourth-quarter earnings climbed 96% as the Internet-domain-name company revenue and margins strengthened and as special items boosted bottom-line results.

W.R. Grace & Co. (>> W.R. Grace & Co.) said it will record a smaller-than-expected $365 million pre-tax charge in the fourth quarter related to the specialty chemical company's increased asbestos-related liability.
