Johnson was the founder of Adial Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (founded in 2010) and served as the Chief Medical Officer from 2019 to 2024.
He currently holds multiple positions, including being a Member of the American Psychiatric Association (since 2000), the New York Academy of Sciences (since 1994), the Society For Neuroscience (since 1995), the American College of Forensic Examiners (since 1999), the Society of Biological Psychiatry (since 2001), the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology (since 1995), the University of Maryland School of Medicine (since 2013), the American Board of Disability Analysts (since 2015), the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (since 1999), the National Academy of Neuropsychology (since 2007), the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, Inc. (since 1997), the Old Dominion Medical Society (since 2007), the International Society For Biomedical Research On Alcoholism (since 2003), the Research Society On Alcoholism (since 1995), the British Neuropsychiatry Association Ltd.
(since 1989), and the British Association For Psychopharmacology (since 1986).
He has held former positions at the University of Texas Health Science Center At San Antonio (1998-2004) as the Deputy Chairman-Research & Professor-Psychiatry, the University of Virginia (2004-2013) as a Professor-Medicine & Psychiatry Department, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (1993-1998) as an Assistant Professor-Psychiatry, and the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians (2000-2006) as a Member.
Dr. Johnson obtained a doctorate degree from the University of Glasgow in 2004 and in 1982, and a graduate degree from the University of London in 1991.
