Maine's specifications included support for a 1,300-foot-long, 53-foot-wide bridge. It also needed a straight seam pipe pile with a fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) coating, to help increase durability, improve cost-effectiveness and meet environmental concerns. That's when 3M's RJ Labrador suggested 3M Scotchkote Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating 6233 to coat the 30- to 55-foot-long pipe piles. Lane Enterprises applied the coating and, used together, officials say the pipe piles and epoxy give the new bridge an extended life span.

Problem solved - with an added gift for pedestrians: The footpaths provide a spectacular view of Portland.
