PIRAEUS, Greece, July 18, 2011 – Aegean Bunkering Services Inc., manager of the 11,520 dwt oil products tanker "Aegean Star," regret to report that the vessel was attacked and taken by pirates some 12.5 miles off the Coast of Benin in the early hours of July 16.

Although communications with the vessel have been very limited, it is understood that all 20 seafarers on board are safe. (The crew composition is Greek nationals 3, Filipinos 5, Ghanaians 10, Russians 1 and Ukrainians 1). All the appropriate authorities, including the Flag State - Liberia - have been notified.

According to reports, it would appear that the vessel has now been moved south off the coast of Nigeria. All the families of those on board are being notified of the situation and Aegean Bunkering Services has confirmed that the safety and well-being of the seafarers is of paramount importance at this difficult time.
