• Extreme weather forecasting/flood warning services
  • Critical asset data management
  • Tactical action plans for resilience implementation and grant applications
London, UK (03 July 2015) - Amec Foster Wheeler announces today a partnership with 100 Resilient Cities - Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation (100RC) to give urban centres across the world access to groundbreaking tools allowing them to better plan for potentially destructive weather events.

In collaboration with 100RC, Amec Foster Wheeler will harness meteorological data to provide 100RC member cities with highly detailed forecasts on extreme weather patterns and the impacts they will have on localised infrastructure. The forecasting technology will empower cities to prepare comprehensive plans in advance of oncoming tropical storms, blizzards, and other dangerous natural events. With the data provided by Amec Foster Wheeler, cities will be able to accurately discern which roads will be most impacted in the event of a massive snowstorm or which bridges require additional reinforcement to survive a powerful hurricane.

As part of the agreement, Amec Foster Wheeler is joining 100RC's network of Platform Partners - a group of specialised organisations from the public, private and non-profit sectors that provide critical tools and services for cities to make 100RC member cities better at adapting to the shocks and stresses of our world and transforming them into opportunities for growth.

"At Amec Foster Wheeler, we are driven by providing safe and sustainable project solutions for our customers, many of whom include cities and municipalities worldwide," said Samir Brikho, Chief Executive of Amec Foster Wheeler. "Partnering with 100RC will enable us to harness our worldwide expertise in sustainability, emergency management, weather forecasting, environment and infrastructure to enhance cities' capacity to thrive when experiencing shock and stress."
As a 100RC Platform Partner, Amec Foster Wheeler will also help 100RC member cities to develop critical materials for resilience building projects, such as detailed infrastructure project designs and environmental impact assessments. Peter Hall, who is the Amec Foster Wheeler Director for the platform partnership, will coordinate the firm's resources that can work side-by-side with cities, guiding government staff through each step of the grant application process, to help them understand what is needed by the funding agencies and how to craft the most compelling and successful grant applications for specific resilience projects.

"Cities can't become resilient out of thin air - they need proper tools and the proper organizational support to do so," said Michael Berkowitz, President of 100RC. "Amec Foster Wheeler is leading by example, offering critical data and insight to our member cities and helping to shape a global resilience movement when, and where, it is needed most. Together, Amec Foster Wheeler and 100 Resilient Cities will have the resources, knowledge and professional expertise to help our member cities achieve their resilience building goals."

Through the 100RC Network, cities partnering with Amec Foster Wheeler will receive:

  • Access to extreme weather, marine, and flood forecasting instruments and technology;
  • Pre-feasibility and feasibility study support services to assist with obtaining grants for specific resilience projects;
  • Data management support to identify, prioritise, and track critical assets that are most vulnerable to acute shocks and systematic stresses.

About 100 Resilient Cities-Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation is dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century. 100RC supports the adoption and incorporation of a view of resilience that includes not just the shocks - earthquakes, fires, floods, etc., but also the stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day to day or cyclical basis.

Cities in the 100RC network are provided with the resources along four main pathways: 1) Financial and logistical guidance for establishing an innovative new position in city government, a Chief Resilience Officer, who will lead the city's resilience efforts; 2) Expert support for development of a robust resilience building strategy; 3) Access to solutions, service providers, and partners from the private, public and NGO sectors who can help them develop and implement their resilience strategies; and 4) Membership in a global network of member cities who can learn from and help each other. Through these offerings, 100RC aims not only help individual cities become more resilient, but to facilitate the creation of a global practice of resilience building.

100 Resilient Cities - Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation is financially supported by The Rockefeller Foundation and managed as a sponsored project by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA), an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation that provides governance and operational infrastructure to its sponsored projects.
