Outage, Boil Advisory Will Affect Customers in Southeastern Portion of Indiana American Water's Northwest Indiana Operations

Crews scheduled to repair main break on 16-inch transmission line overnight tonight

Gary, Ind. (July 31, 2015) - More than 3,000 customers in the southeastern portion of the company's Northwest Indiana Operations will be without water for approximately six hours overnight starting at 2 a.m. tomorrow morning, Saturday, August 1, 2015 as crews shut down service to an area located east of a break on a 16-inch transmission main near U.S. 30 and Utah Street in Hobart.

A boil advisory will also be in effect after service is restored on Saturday morning for the area, which includes Winfield and Shorewood Forest, as well as small portions of Merrillville, Hobart and unincorporated portions of Porter County.
The company will be using the CodeRed emergency notification tool to call customers in the affected area and is asking customers to share information on the outage with neighbors, friends and family members that live in the affected area, especially those living in rental properties and apartments where the cost of water service is paid for by their landlord. An
interactive map showing the affected area is available online at http://arcg.is/1fQirTO.
One service is restored, customers in the affected area are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for approximately three minutes. Tap water can be used for
washing/bathing.

OUTAGE, BOIL WATER ADVISORY TO AFFECT CERTAIN NORTHWEST INDIANA CUSTOMERS

Customers may want to fill a few sterile containers with water on Friday evening for consumption over the weekend in anticipation of the outage and boil water advisory. Water in containers should be refrigerated after they are filled.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event water pressure drops below 20 pounds
per square inch (psi) in any part of a distribution system. According to company officials, boil advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer's best interests in mind. It's possible, but unlikely, bacteria could enter the water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.
During the boil water advisory, the water company performs a series of tests to determine if the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. The boil advisory will expire at 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 2 assuming sample results taken from several sites within the affected area show no bacterial contamination is present. Any additional information regarding this
boil advisory will be shared with residents through local media outlets, the company's Facebook page and through the company's CodeRed phone notification service.
Additional information on boil water alerts is available on the company's website at http://www.amwater.com/inaw/Water-Quality-and-Stewardship/.
