Virginia American Water Extends Water Line in South Old Town Alexandria Extension represents $350,000 investment in city's aging infrastructure

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (August 16, 2017) - Virginia American Water is extending a water line at

S. Washington and Church Streets in the City of Alexandria. The company will install 750 feet of new 12-inch water main to improve water reliability and fire hydrant flow capacity to Bridgeyard Apartments (formerly Hunting Point on the Potomac) and Porto Vecchio Condominiums.

Currently, only one existing 12-inch water main supplies water to these complexes. The water line extension will help to ensure that the apartment and condominium homes do not lose water in the event of a main break or fire.

"The $350,000 investment the company is making will allow us to help ensure that the thousands of people who live at Bridegeyard Apartments and Porto Vecchio Condominiums will have plenty of water if an emergency arises," said Barry Suits, president, Virginia American Water. "This project is also part of our commitment to proactively replace and upgrade the aging water infrastructure in the City of Alexandria."

Virginia American Water's contractor, Utilities Unlimited, will route the water line extension around the west perimeter of Freedmen's Cemetery, located at the corner of S. Washington and Church Streets. Freedmen's Cemetery is a Civil War-era African American burial ground, and the site of a memorial commemorating the graves that remain there. The water pipe will be routed along the boundary of Freedmen's Cemetery in order to avoid disturbing graves or other significant archeological materials. AECOM performed archeological studies on the site, with the guidance of the City of Alexandria.

Due to the location of the apartment and condominium buildings south of

I-495, the only feasible solution for extending the water line is at the perimeter of Freedmen's Cemetery. In addition, St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery is located on the east side of South Washington Street at the junction where the new 12-inch pipe will connect to an existing pipe.

Work hours are Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Church Street; and 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on S. Washington Street. Sections of street where construction is taking place may be closed during work hours. Virginia American Water will coordinate with residents about local traffic access.

Motorists should use caution, obey traffic signs and follow any detour routes when driving in the area. Weekend work is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. The project will be complete by the end of December 2017.
