Fighting Fit: Future-proofing the UK’s defence and security estate

Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, today published its paper 'Fighting Fit: Delivering Defence and Security Infrastructure for the Future'.

Future-proofing a defence and security estate of a phenomenal size and complexity is a significant challenge. With a substantial shortage in funding and a major reduction in the footprint of the military estate, the UK construction sector must be prepared to address the challenges involved in commissioning the vital infrastructure needed to ensure the country's operational readiness.

In its latest paper, Balfour Beatty identifies the key points required to move to a different way of working between those responsible for commissioning schemes and the construction and infrastructure industry.

Balfour Beatty believes that a combination of moving to a partnership model, early contractor engagement, using single contractors and supporting the adoption of new technologies will help deliver significant savings, enabling the delivery of a defence and estate that is fit for the future.

• On behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, Balfour Beatty has delivered the £150m Ministry of Defence's Lyneham 1,200 acre training facility, the construction of the new £42m A400M Hangar at RAF Brize Norton and a series of Typhoon relocation projects at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland. The company is currently on site at RAF Marham in Norfolk, building engineering and training facilities for the UK's first F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

• Balfour Beatty is a proud signatory of the UK's Armed Forces Covenant (PGold) which includes a number of commitments to the Armed Forces and Reservists. In August 2017 Balfour Beatty received a 'Gold Award' under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).
