Balqon Corporation (OTCBB: BLQN), a developer of heavy duty electric drive system technology for commercial vehicles, was the first company to introduce Class 8, battery powered electric tractors in 2007. Since then, Balqon has pioneered by integrating heavy duty drive systems into buses in China and India and joint developing Class 8 trucks with European partners. This week, Balqon commited to developing another industry first: A Class 8 plug-in hybrid heavy-duty drive system for trucks and buses.

While Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) or General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) are leaders in electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles for consumers, Balqon is focused on the heavy duty commercial EV market, a segment of market responsible for significant air pollution in inner cities worldwide. Balqon expects to integrate plug-in-hybrid option in all 2014 truck and bus models before end of this year.
