BASF SE The interns were selected from universities across Texas and Louisiana including: Lamar University, Texas State University, Texas A&M University, University of Texas Austin, Louisiana State University, and University of Houston. The students participated in assignments that allowed them to apply their technical skills and knowledge to real-world situations.
The interns were placed into various departments at BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals that best matched their fields of study including: chemical, mechanical, and petroleum engineering, business accounting and human resources.
"I enjoyed the freedom of working independently on my project," said Kaitlyn McCoy, a freshman majoring in chemical engineering at Lamar University. "I feel really good about what I accomplished because the project that I was assigned is one that the company plans to implement in the future." McCoy is the 2013 and 2014 recipient of the BASF Scholarship in Chemical Engineering at Lamar University and is also an alumnus of the BASF Science Academy program.
In addition to assigned responsibilities at the manufacturing facility in Port Arthur, the interns also had the opportunity to participate in plant tours of the BASF Gulf Coast sites that included the Pasadena, Freeport, Beaumont and Houston locations.
"I had an amazing time this summer. I networked and worked with people who are committed to the operation and maintenance of a world class facility," said Alexander Bello, junior chemical engineering student at the University of Houston. "The dedication that the BASF TOTAL Petrochemicals team has to safety, optimization and maintenance is really exciting and is definitely something I have never seen before," he added.
