Australians pledge to drive towards a Fatality Free Friday

May 29, 2014

Tens of thousands of Caltex employees, shareholders, customers and suppliers have pledged to do their bit for road safety as the nation prepares for tomorrow's eighth annual Fatality Free Friday.

Fatality Free Friday, an initiative of the Australian Road Safety Foundation, is now the nation's largest community road safety day.

Caltex Australia General Manager Supply Chain Andrew Brewer said the nation's leading fuel supplier was proud to be the major corporate sponsor of the Fatality Free Friday initiative.

"For Caltex, safety is at the heart of everything we do to keep Australia moving. We also fuel millions of motorists' vehicles every week, so we are uniquely placed to spread the important message about the role we can all play in keeping our roads safe," Mr Brewer said.

"Fatality Free Friday is about encouraging all road users to not only concentrate on safety for that one day, but also choose to change their approach to driving for every other day of the year.

"The importance of this safety message cannot be underestimated - last year there was an eight per cent reduction in deaths on Australian roads compared to the total for the year before.

"Yet, tragically, 1,193 men, women and children lost their lives on our roads in 2013 - every life lost is one life too many.

"Fatality Free Friday recognises that the actions, decisions and behaviours of every road user can be the difference between life and death."

A fleet of inflatable vehicles has been visiting Caltex retail sites across Australia, allowing motorists to sign the pledge to themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey road rules.

Caltex is encouraging all motorists to join the thousands who have already signed the pledge committing to arrive home safe.
