The centre will provide training opportunities for people working on the project as well as helping the long-term unemployed in the local community, by offering support and advice on how to write CVs, fill in job applications and give successful interviews.

Staff working for SMES will be able to access training which will help improve their skills, working in conjunction with Liverpool in Work.

Simon Webb, Carillion's project leader for Royal Liverpool University Hospital said: "Royal Liverpool University Hospital is having a positive impact on the city of Liverpool.

"Working in partnership Carillion and UCATT have created a Learning Centre which is available to everyone on the project and the local community. It will be a facility where people are able to gain construction qualifications, as well as enhancing other skills."

Opening the new centre, Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson said: "This is a superb initiative by UCATT and Carillion. With the Royal, which is largely using local labour, not only will we have a legacy of a world-class hospital but we will have a workforce which has greater skills to stand them in better stead to get work and benefit the city region. It will also give local people a much better chance of finding employment."

The centre will also offer one-day safety courses to prepare workers for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS).CSCS is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry.

Carillion has set a target of recruiting 60% of employees on the RLUH project from the Liverpool area, and building positive relationships with local firms.

The construction of the £335 million hospital aims to create around 1,000 jobs by the end of the year.
