The annual awards recognise the vital contribution made by Highways England's suppliers who are modernising, maintaining and operating England's network of motorways and major A roads.

Carillion's A1 Leeming to Barton project in Yorkshire, which Carillion is undertaking in partnership with Morgan Sindall, were overall winners in the Health, Safety and Well-Being and Managing Down Cost categories.

The A1 Leeming to Barton Improvement Scheme is a £380m highway project that will improve safety and journey time reliability between London and major urban centres in the North of England and Scotland and will result in a continuous motorway standard route between London and Newcastle.

The Health Safety and Well-Being Category is awarded to suppliers who show industry-leading commitment to enhancing organisational, workforce and road user health and safety. In collaboration with Redspeed International and North Yorkshire Police, the project developed an initiative to change drivers' behaviours and reduce violations by large goods vehicle drivers. This resulted in a 94 per cent reduction in width and weight violations through roadworks.

The Carillion Morgan Sindall Joint Venture also won the Managing Down Cost category for the project's approach to innovation and delivering significant cost savings and efficiencies at all stages. The project was also recognised for its application of Building Information Modelling systems on the project.

In addition, the project was highly commended in the Communities category for showing how it has engaged with community groups from the outset of the project. It was commended for the work done to keep the public informed and engage with charitable and community groups.

David Lowery, Project Director for the Carillion Morgan Sindall Joint Venture said: 'We are delighted to receive these awards from Highways England. The professional and performance driven approach from the project team is underpinned by our vision to deliver excellence in health and safety, delivering value and delighting our customers and stakeholders. This is another excellent award for the project and one the team should be very proud of.'
