CIOs Chart Information Technology's Role As An Agent Of Digital Change At CEB IT Summit

Industry Leaders Come Together to Transform the Structure, Governance and Skills of Large Companies to Enable Digital Innovation

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 4, 2016/PRNewswire / -- CEB (NYSE: CEB), a best practice insight and technology company, held its North American Summit for IT Leaders last week, bringing together more than 300 global CIOs and their leadership teams. Across two days, they discussed the opportunity IT leaders have to be agents of change as their organizations digitize.

CEB's Summit provides the opportunity for IT leaders from all industries to come together and discuss universal priorities and solutions. This year, attendees heard from visionary IT leaders who shared their organizations' ambitious strategies for transforming products, channels and operations. The actions these leaders are taking stand out from traditional IT approaches - for them, IT strategy and business strategy are one in the same, with the business and the IT function working closely to ensure success. They are reshaping how IT operates, and explained that as digitization creates new opportunities for business growth, efficiency and competitive advantage, it also produces new career prospects for IT leaders.

'Leadership teams often equate digitization with technology, but the IT leaders who joined our Summit agree that changes to business strategy, operations and talent make more of a difference in achieving digital success,' said Andrew Horne, IT Practice Leader, CEB. 'In fact, companies that get those changes right are 15 times more likely to achieve their digitization goals. As digitization becomes central to business competition, IT is uniquely positioned to help organizations with the operational and talent implications, not just the technology. The CIOs who are really making a difference in their companies' growth trajectories are those that are deeply involved in setting digital strategy and promoting changes across the company.'

Attendees engaged on three conference themes:

  • IT and business strategy are one and the same: Technology is critical to how businesses grow and remain competitive - there is no longer a difference between business strategy and IT strategy. During the event, IT leaders discussed how to exploit digital opportunities in products, channels and operations and address unseen barriers to digitization in all parts of the business.
  • IT needs a new operating model: While DevOps and Agile get a lot of attention, they only scratch the surface. Senior IT leaders from Fortune 500 companies described a more fundamental change to how work gets done in IT - a move from projects to products - and shared best practices for getting the implementation right.
  • Digitization is ultimately a talent challenge: Companies' ability to digitize hinges on how quickly their workforce adapts. The Summit had a deep focus on talent, including the digital skills and competencies needed for the IT and business teams of the future. Participants discussed how to promote a climate of openness and innovation and the ways the CIO role is changing to support digital organizations. The Summit also featured case studies and practitioner examples for how to build diverse and inclusive IT departments.
