CLP Clinches two Silver Awards in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) wins two silver awards in the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2014: Best Green ICT (Adoption - Large-scale Enterprises) and Best Business Solution (Internet of Things). The awards recognise CLP Power's achievements in the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
The outstanding energy saving performance of CLP Power's data centre makes it named silver award winner in the Best Green ICT (Adoption - Large-scale Enterprises) category. While the operating temperature of most data centres in Hong Kong is below 22oC, CLP Power is the first to implement the latest energy saving technologies to run the data centre at 29oC and greatly reduce energy consumption. The new technologies include building a high energy efficiency zone equipped with free cooling, cold aisle containment and in-row cooling.
Free cooling is commonly used at data centres that operate in northern regions with cold and dry weather, like Finland and provinces in northern China. "Despite the fact that Hong Kong is located in the hot and humid subtropical region, CLP Power's data centre has successfully demonstrated exemplary use of free cooling for the industry", said Mr Andre Blumberg, Director - Information Technology of CLP Power.
"CLP Power expects to reduce 30% monthly energy consumption and achieve a PUE (Power
Usage Effectiveness) of 1.7 or lower." Average PUE numbers for data centers in Hong Kong is
2.2, only those ranking in the top 25% can achieve a PUE of 1.7.
Furthermore, CLP Power's comprehensive pilot "my Energy Program", which was launched last year has also been selected as the sole Best Business Solution (Internet of Things) award winner. The scheme features an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system that enables
3,000 residential customers and around 1,400 small to medium-sized enterprise customers to track their electricity consumption via a dedicated web portal and mobile app. By receiving timely information on their energy usage and energy saving tips, customers are given greater control to achieve energy efficiency. CLP Power was the first utility in South East Asia to launch an AMI system that works from the billing system all the way through to the meters in
the field.

The judging panel recognises that "myEnergy Program" is a good demonstration of lnternet of Things and CLP Power as a thought leader in Hong Kong. It provides a triple-win situation of enhancing customers' awareness on energy efficiency and conservation, enabling the power company to enhance operational efficiency and customer services, as well as contributing to a sustainable future for Hong Kong.
Launched in 2006 and steered by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the annual Hong Kong ICT Awards aims at recognising and promoting outstanding ICT innovations and applications.
