On roads or race tracks, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics' Seals demonstrate best all-round performance. The latest example to date: the KA-Raceing 'Formula Student Germany Electric' competition, where the Seals Business Unit sponsored the winning team from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany.

The racing car used Meldin thrust washers that were designed by Saint-Gobain Seals for the gearbox; this product was selected for their friction and wear resistance properties along with their thermal characteristics. They can withstand temperatures ranging from 316°C in continuous operation to over 482°C, intermittently.

The KA-Raceing team's car thus finished first, clocking the fastest race time. This was the first time they had won the Formula Student Germany Electric since competing in 2007. 'This collaborative project with the engineering students from Karlsruhe University goes to show just how much our precise parts, whether on small closed tracks or larger roads, are critical components for the auto industry, in gearboxes, transmission and steering systems', says Peter Werger, Seals BU Market manager.
