Constantin Medien AG recorded a solid third quarter 2016, which was marked by a profit growth in the Segment Sports, but also lower sales in the Segment Film. For the 2016 full-year, the Management Board confirms its previous forecasts in terms of profit from operations (EBIT) and earnings attributable to shareholders. Due to the operating business development to date, however, the Management Board adjusted Group sales expectations downwards.

Key figures

  • Group sales amounted to EUR 365.7 million after nine months, compared to EUR 329.0 million in the same period last year (+11.2 percent). In the third quarter, sales at EUR 101.7 million were 23.7 percent behind the corresponding previous year's figure (EUR 133.3 million). This was caused by exploitation-related lower sales, primarily in the area of theatrical distribution. The comparative quarter 2015 was marked by the success of the theatrical movie 'Fack Ju Göhte 2'.
  • After nine months, Group profit from operations (EBIT) amounted to EUR 17.6 million and was below the prior year's level of EUR 24.6 million. The decrease mainly resulted from the Segment Film. In the third quarter EBIT declined from EUR 14.8 million in the prior year's period to EUR 6.6 million.
  • The Group shows a net profit of EUR 3.5 million for the first nine months, after EUR 8.6 million in the same period last year. Earnings attributable to shareholders stood at EUR -0.2 million (9M 2015: EUR 3.9 million). In the third quarter Group net profit decreased from EUR 8.7 million to EUR 2.5 million; earnings attributable to shareholders came in at EUR 1.2 million (Q3 2015: EUR 4.2 million).

Performance of the segments
  • In the Segment Sports, with the umbrella brand SPORT1, with 1.5 percent the market share of the free-TV channel in the core target group men aged 14 to 49 years remained almost stable in the first nine months (9M 2015: 1.6 percent), despite the fierce competition from the UEFA EURO 2016™ and the Summer Olympics. SPORT1 once again increased in page impressions and visits in the mobile area. From January to September, segment sales at EUR 111.3 million remained stable against the previous-year period (9M 2015: EUR 111.6 million). Segment result decreased from EUR 7.9 million (9M 2015) to EUR 5.8 million, primarily due to higher license costs in the first half of 2016. In the third quarter segment sales stood at EUR 35.7 million (Q3 2015: EUR 35.5 million); segment result increased to EUR 2.3 million (Q3 2015: EUR 1.3 million).
  • Sales in the Segment Film increased by 19.0 percent to EUR 213.9 million after nine months (9M 2015: EUR 179.7 million). After sales successes in the first half-year 2016 in the areas license trading and home entertainment (including the productions 'Shadowhunters' and 'Fack Ju Göhte 2'), in the third quarter segment sales at EUR 52.5 million were 36.4 percent below the level of Q3 2015. The comparative prior year quarter was marked by the very successful release of 'Fack Ju Göhte 2'. Segment result of the first three quarters reached EUR -0.5 million (9M 2015: EUR 8.8 million). In the third quarter segment result was slightly negative at EUR -0.1 million.
  • In the Segment Sports- and Event-Marketing, nine-months sales at EUR 40.3 million were 14.8 percent above the prior-year level (9M 2015: EUR 35.1 million), due to an unchanged positive business development. Segment result increased by 17.0 percent to EUR 15.8 million (9M 2015: EUR 13.5 million). In the third quarter sales amounted to EUR 13.5 million against EUR 14.2 million in the previous-year period; the quarterly result stood at EUR 5.2 million (Q3 2015: EUR 5.6 million).

Outlook for the full-year 2016
Previous guidance in terms of profit from operations (EBIT) from EUR 29 million to EUR 33 million and earnings attributable to shareholders from EUR 6 million to EUR 9 million will be unchanged. Due to the operating business development to date, from today's perspective the Management Board is now assuming Group sales of EUR 522 million to EUR 562 million (previously: EUR 550 million to EUR 590 million) in the 2016 financial year.
