Costain : M4 Project Wins CEEQUAL Award

Sir John Armitt, the President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, recently visited the Welsh Government's M4 Corridor around Newport project to present a top sustainability award to the design and construction team.

The project won a CEEQUAL award, an awards scheme designed to promote, record and recognise improvements in sustainability and environmental performance in civils projects. The award was presented to the team at the project's offices in Cardiff on June 17.

Presented for a collaborative venture between Costain, Vinci Construction, Grands Projets and Taylor Woodrow, with design expertise from Atkins in partnership with Arup and RPS, the award recognises Costain, together with its joint venture partners, in providing design development for the project.

The project received an Excellent rated 'Sustainability Performance Assessment' (78.8% score) for work undertaken by the client (Welsh Government) and the project JV team through to the completion of the outline design.

The project includes 24 km of new motorway and a 2.5 km long cable-stayed viaduct crossing of the River Usk, as well as major remodelling of M4 junctions 23 and 29. The project also forms part of the strategic roads network, which aims to deliver a more efficient, safer and sustainable transport network, supporting and encouraging long-term prosperity in the region.

Colin Cartwright from Atkins, who compiled the assessment, said: 'A key aspect of the CEEQUAL scheme is that it recognises the consideration of processes that lead to good outcomes, as well as the outcomes themselves. The achievement by the M4 project team in gaining this award illustrates the detailed review and consideration of options across the project, at the development and outline design stages, so that impacts to the environment and local community have been minimised where possible, and opportunities for improvements maximised'.

Barry Woodman, the Project Director, added: 'We are delighted to have scored so highly in the CEEQUAL assessment process which measured our sustainability and environmental performance credentials. While it's a great achievement, we can't rest on our laurels as the assessment also identified areas for improvement against an independently verified industry recognised scheme.'
