Nutraceutical Business and Technology Awards Recognize Covance & Battle Creek Unlimited for Best New Partnership

PRINCETON, N.J., June 18, 2013 - Covance Inc. (NYSE: CVD),  a world leader in nutritional chemistry and food safety testing, announced today that a partnership between Covance and Battle Creek Unlimited received the Best New Partnership, Merger or Acquisition Award at the 2013 Nutraceutical Business & Technology Awards held recently in Geneva, Switzerland.  Battle Creek Unlimited is the economic development organization serving Battle Creek, Michigan.

The award recognizes excellence in Research & Development (R & D), marketing, business and technology throughout the food and nutritional industry.  Covance and Battle Creek Unlimited were recognized for an innovative partnership that is helping to promote excellence in food science, shape the next generation of food scientists and help transform Battle Creek into a food science, innovation and growth-oriented community.

The partnership began in 2010 when Covance opened a 42,000 square-foot laboratory in Battle Creek, home to three international cereal and food product manufacturers, which helped to stimulate the city's revitalization efforts.  Since 2008, downtown Battle Creek has seen major improvements thanks to private investments of approximately $87 million (including $15 million by Covance), and more than 1,000 new jobs, including more than 60 research scientists, technicians and management in the food science or research concentrations serving the industry.

"I'm proud that Covance and Battle Creek Unlimited were recognized for the hard work that both teams put into the effort," said Brad Riemenapp, VP & General Manager of Nutritional Chemistry & Food Safety for Covance.  "This award is so important because it also shows what can be done by forming strong partnerships between companies like Covance and the community.  Finding ways to help the community - through education, internships, fellowships and job creation - while providing operational and service excellence to our clients is a win-win for Covance, and something we will continue to support in the future."

Along with the transformation, Battle Creek Public Schools is investing $14 million into a new math and science center which will be located in downtown Battle Creek.  It is slated to open later this year.

"We were thrilled to receive this award with Covance," said Karl Dehn, President and CEO from Battle Creek Unlimited.  "It positions Battle Creek as a global force in food sciences.  The revitalization of our city is underway and we hope to expand upon this partnership with Covance to accomplish even more in the next few years.  Our emphasis on training the next generation of food scientists is essential to the industry, and we are proud to continue to play a role in this important work."
