MINNEAPOLIS - May 24, 2016

The Claude 'Bud' Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant in California, USA, which was designed and engineered by IDE Technologies with reverse osmosis membranes from Dow Water & Process Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) was recently named Desalination Plant of the Year 2016. The award was presented at the Global Water Awards at the Global Water Summit in Abu Dhabi April 19 - 20.

IDE Technologies was recognized for its work on the Carlsbad Desalination Plant, a joint venture between Poseidon Resources and Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners, for the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA), located in Carlsbad, California. Additional partners on the project include: Kiewit/JF Shea, Protec Arisawa, ERI and Dow Water & Process Solutions.

'With the continued drought in California, this facility brings a much needed 'drought-proof' solution, leveraging IDE's technology and including Dow membrane elements,' said Yochai Gafni, RO business unit director for Dow Water & Process Solutions, 'On behalf of Dow Water & Process Solutions, we would like to congratulate the IDE Technologies team for this well-deserved recognition.'

The Carlsbad Desalination Plant serves nearly 400,000 residents in San Diego County, California, meeting 7 percent of potable water needs for the area. With a strong sustainability model, the facility will also have a neutral carbon footprint becoming the first large infrastructure in California to accomplish this feat.

The plant came on-stream in 2015, more than ten years after its inception and will require 12 percent less energy and approximately 23 percent less membrane elements and pressure vessels to yield the same quality and quantity of water had it been built with the technology available 10 years ago. The Global Water Awards is made up of 12 categories this year and overall recognizes innovative initiatives that will impact the industry through improved operating performance, new technologies, and more sustainable financial models in the water, wastewater and desalination markets. After the shortlisted nominees are chosen, the winners are voted on and selected by the subscribers of Global Water Intelligence and Water Desalination Report.

Dow Water & Process Solutions and IDE Technologies first partnered together in 2005, during a collaboration on the Ashkelon Desalination Facility, the first mega-plant of its time. The two companies continue to enjoy strong collaboration in delivering projects that enable access to clean water.
