Greatcell Solar SA is a subsidiary of Dyesol in Switzerland. The company develops solar cells based on a revolutionary new technology and plans to set up a new laboratory in the Lausanne area, where specific research will be undertaken to complement development work by Dyesol in Australia and in the UK. This opens up the opportunity for the employment of:

Industrial Solar Cell Researcher

The role will involve initially setting up suitable laboratory facilities and processing equipment and then subsequent laboratory cell preparation by varying materials and cell design parameters and testing of the assembled devices for performance.
Under the general direction and supervision of the Project Manager, the successful candidate is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Specification of equipment for novel semiconductor solar cell layer deposition and cell assembly
  • Preparation of organometallic and ceramic based pastes and coating fluids
  • Deposition of pastes and inks through screen printing, inkjet printing, spray pyrolysis, spin coating or other relevant techniques
  • Preparation and deposition of additional solar cell components including hole transport materials, metallisation and sealants
  • Assembly of test cell devices largely under inert atmosphere to evaluate materials and designs
  • Electrical and electronic design of custom deposition and/or testing apparatus, including associated software programming
  • Analysis of data and writing of summary reports

Qualifications/experience

Under graduate diploma or a degree in Physical Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science.
Experience with screen printing and other material deposition techniques and familiarity with glove box work is essential.
The successful candidate will have at least one year of experience carrying out R&D in an industrial environment and possess the following attributes:

  • Excellent skills in operating and maintaining a large range of technical and scientific equipment, including preparation of custom apparatus from conceptualisation, through design and to realisation of final prototype
  • "Can do" attitude
  • Excellent manual dexterity
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent level of English for liaising with UK and Australian operations
  • Excellent computer skills for data analysis, including an in-depth knowledge of Visual Basic for macro programming in Microsoft Excel
  • An ability to work both autonomously and within a team environment.

Materials Scientist

The role will involve initially setting up suitable laboratory facilities and processing equipment and then substantially contributing to the company's materials development program.
Under the general direction and supervision of the Project Manager, the successful candidate is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Specification of equipment for inorganic and/or organic semiconductor synthesis, formulation and deposition
  • Development of novel inorganic and/or organic semiconductor materials
  • Development and formulation of organometallic and ceramic based pastes and coating fluids necessary for solar cell materials deposition
  • Deposition of ceramic and polymeric materials through screen printing, inkjet printing, spray pyrolysis, spin coating or other relevant techniques
  • Preparation and deposition of additional solar cell components including hole transport materials, metallisation and sealants
  • Assembly of test cell devices largely under inert atmosphere to evaluate materials and designs
  • Literature surveys, analysis of data and writing of technical scientific reports.

Qualifications/experience
Degree in Materials Science or Chemistry, preferably at the post-graduate level.
Experience with inorganic and organic semiconductors, XRD, screen printing and other material deposition techniques and familiarity with glove box work is essential.
The successful candidate will have experience carrying out R&D, preferably in an industrial environment and possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Excellent understanding of inorganic and organic semiconductor materials science, including paste formulation for printing and coating-type applications
  • "Can do" attitude
  • Excellent manual dexterity
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent level of English for liaising with UK and Australian operations
  • An ability to work both autonomously and within a team environment.

Greatcell Solar SA will offer a salary commensurate with skills and experience.
Applications addressing the above selection criteria, including a CV, cover letter and copies of diplomas and relevant certificates should be submitted to hansd at dyesol.com before Close of Business 26 January 2014.
