16 October, 2012 du expands partnership with Heliocentris to further reduce carbon footprint at its mobile network base stations

'Genset Efficiency' solutions from Heliocentris significantly reduces fuel consumption, emissions and lowers operating expenses

Dubai, UAE: As part of its continued efforts to adopt green solutions and achieve sustainability in the UAE, du announced its plan to increase the number of CO2 emission-reducing, turnkey energy management systems and monitoring solutions, called 'Genset Efficiency', in the company mobile base stations.

The announcement was made during GITEX Technology Week 2012 and coincides with du's support to the upcoming World Energy Forum as a lead sponsor. Present at the ceremony was Farid Faraidooni, Chief Commercial Officer, du, Ayad Abul-Ella, CEO, Heliocentris accompanied by Jasem Al Marzouki, Senior Director, Civil and EM, du, and Michael Kutschenreeuter, General Manager Middle East and Africa, Heliocentris.

Ever since the signing of the initial agreement with Heliocentris to implement Genset Efficiency solutions, du has made significant strides in its efforts to go green. Some of the achievements include:
• 60% annual savings in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
• 70% savings in generator running hours and reduction in maintenance requirements and noise pollution
• Reduction in fuel consumption by 420,000 litres and reduction in CO2 emissions by 1,050 tonnes as of Aug 2012 since December 2011.
With the continued implementation of the green solutions, du expects a saving in fuel consumption by 6.8Million litres and reduction in CO2 emissions by 17,000 tonnes by end of 2014.
Farid Faraidooni, Chief Commercial Officer, du, said: "Sustainability is a cornerstone in our business strategy and we are proud of results achieved by reducing the CO2 emissions to more than 60% annually. Today we are expanding the number of green solutions in our network to contribute to the UAE leadership vision of Green Economy".

Ayad Abul-Ella, CEO, Heliocentris said:"The UAE is well-known for adopting the latest technology and especially in the green technology. We believe this collaboration with du is a testament of reliability and effectiveness of our telecom green energy solutions. We are committed to extend the best solutions and support to du to help them achieve sustainability."

The Genset Efficiency solution controls the operation of mobile base stations' diesel generators. An automotive style hybridization of the diesel genset with a battery in combination with an intelligent energy management increases efficiency and considerably reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 50% and more. In addition, the Energy Manager increases the transparency of operational tasks by monitoring the network infrastructure and thus decreasing downtime of the towers as well as maintenance efforts.

This project is managed by the Heliocentris branch office (P21), located in Silicon Oasis, Dubai which  was launched at the end of 2011 with to cater for the company growing operations in the Middle East and Africa. This underlines the importance of the region as a growth driver and is at the same time a further sign of Heliocentris' strong commitment to this region.
