HBA is the best public hospital for medicine interns

06-04-17

Hospital Beatriz Ângelo (HBA) was rated in first place in a national satisfaction survey promoted by the Ordem dos Médicos to evaluate the conditions of medical internship.

The survey, anonymous and voluntary, was conducted between April and May 2016 and targeted 9774 doctors doing internship in 35 units of Portuguese National Health Service. About 3456 interns answered the survey (about 35%), HBA having reached, in the classification by institution, the highest level of satisfaction, among all National Health Service hospitals.

At national level, interns expressed, overall, high level of satisfaction, although with asymmetries according to specialty and region. The survey included 40 statements, covering different aspects relevant for the medical educational, on which the interns were required to give a rate from 0 (totally disagree) to 4 (totally agree).

According to the Ordem dos Médicos, its purpose was to evaluate the professionals' satisfaction in internship, as well as to identify possible aspects to be improved, considering that the related legislation was reviewed in 2015 with significant alterations. 'To conciliate work and learning in a clinical environment is a hard task for interns. The existence of an institutional culture of clinical learning is essential in the training of competent physicians. Patients followed-up by unsatisfied and unmotivated doctors present a higher degree of dissatisfaction towards healthcare and worse health indicators', highlights the document containing the conclusions of the survey.

Analysing the results by specialty, those obtaining a higher level of satisfaction were: Endocrinology/Nutrition, Cardiology, Anesthesiology, Family and General Medicine, and Gastroenterology. The specialities of Legal Medicine, Medical Oncology, Intern Medicine, General Surgery, and Pneumology showed the lower level of satisfaction.

It is worth mentioning that internship occurs after obtaining medical license, including a first year of general training (Common Year), followed by a period of training between four to six years (Specific Training), according to the specialty of training of each intern.
