Operators at Braidwood Generating Station declared and terminated an unusual event Wednesday, after station security heard gunshots near the perimeter of the plant's property away from the facility's generating units.

BRACEVILLE, Ill. - Operators at Braidwood Generating Station declared and terminated an unusual event Wednesday, after station security heard gunshots near the perimeter of the plant's property away from the facility's generating units.

Station operators acted conservatively to declare the event, calling in local law enforcement to investigate. Local law enforcement and station security responded to the area of interest and determined that the event did not present a potential threat to the plant or its employees.

The unusual event was declared at 7:43 p.m. CDT and terminated at 9:34 p.m. CDT.

Nuclear plant security officers are trained paramilitary personnel who protect the plant on a 24/7 basis.

Station personnel notified local, state and federal officials, including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), regarding the event. An unusual event is the lowest of four emergency classifications established by the NRC.

Braidwood Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station's two nuclear energy units can produce a total of more than 2,300 megawatts of carbon free electricity - enough to power more than 2 million typical homes.
