Operators returned Dresden Generating Station Unit 3 to full power last night, marking the successful completion of a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.

MORRIS, Ill. (Nov. 22, 2014) - Operators returned Dresden Generating Station Unit 3 to full power last night, marking the successful completion of a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. The unit was taken off line on Monday, Nov. 3.

During the 16-day outage, Exelon employees and highly skilled supplemental workers performed more than 9,000 activities, including extensive safety inspections and tests, along with numerous plant improvements.

About 1,500 additional workers joined the station's permanent workforce to support the outage. Many of these supplemental workers traveled to Dresden from outside the area, providing a significant boost to the local economy for several weeks.

"It takes a great deal of planning, skill and hard work to complete a successful refueling outage," said Dresden Site Vice President Shane Marik. "We look forward to generating, clean, safe and reliable energy for our customers during the next two year operating cycle."

Exelon operates 11 nuclear units at six sites in Illinois. These facilities provide 48 percent of the state's total electricity and 90 percent of its carbon-free electricity.

Dresden Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station's two nuclear energy units can produce more than 1,900 megawatts at full power - enough carbon-free electricity to power more than 1.2 million typical homes. Dresden Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1960 and was retired in 1978, has been designated a Nuclear Historic Landmark by the American Nuclear Society.
