Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Unit 1 automatically shut down at 9:15 ET this morning when a steam valve closed during routine testing. Operators responded appropriately, and all systems functioned as designed. Nine Mile Point's two reactors are designed to shutdown safely if potential equipment issues are identified. The shutdown does not present any risk to public health or safety.
Technicians will repair the valve and perform comprehensive tests before returning Unit 1 to service. Nine Mile Point Unit 2 continues to operate at full power. The station notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and state officials as per procedure.
Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station is located seven miles northeast of Oswego and 50 miles north of Syracuse. The station can produce more than 1,937 megawatts of carbon-free electricity - enough to power more than two million typical homes.###
