On November 12th, a meeting of security units of global platinum mining leaders (MMC Norilsk Nickel, Anglo American Platinum Ltd., Impala Platinum Ltd., Lonmin Plc., Royal Bafokeng Platinum) spearheaded by the International Platinum Group Metals Association was hosted by Norilsk Nickel Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting was chaired by Vladislav Gasumyanov, Corporate Security Directorate, Director - Head of the Security Unit, MMC Norilsk Nickel in his second term as the IPA Security Committee Chairman.

Heads of the South African Republic National Police service and Chief of the Anglo Research analytical laboratory (Anglo American Platinum corporation) joined the Security Committee member-companies in active discussion.

The agenda covered efforts to combat illicit trade of precious metals, improving security of producers and products supply chains, as well as urgent issues of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). Under the UN resolution on Combating transnational organized crime and its possible links to illicit trafficking in precious metals lobbied by the Russian Federation and the South Aftican Republic, UNICRI is going to conduct special research to highlight the issue and come up with solutions. The committee members exchanged opinions on the proposed industry database of "risky products" and advances of research programs dealing with origin tracing of PGM-bearing products.

Norilsk Nickel's proposal to introduce PGM identification criteria usable at input monitoring of processing plants and refineries to combat illicit transshipment of precious metals was met with positive feedback. Information security and development of international cooperation were strongly highlighted at the meeting.
