Johnson City, N.Y., May 5, 2015 - Greene, New York resident Philip Nielsen recently became the first person in the state to be fit with the Triton smart ankle, the world's newest microprocessor-controlled prosthetic ankle-foot. The Triton's innovative technology allows users to walk with confidence, without having to think about their next step.

Johnson City-area journalists attended Nielsen's recent clinical follow-up appointment with his Hanger Clinic Clinician, Ryan Stark, CPO. Following are some of the resulting news stories:

About Nielsen: Philip Nielsen, 42, lost his right leg below-the-knee in 1993 as the result of a motorcycle accident; however, he hasn't let that slow him down. Some of Nielsen's hobbies include playing with his children, skiing, hiking, and exercising.

About the Triton: Using embedded sensors and built-in Bluetooth connectivity, the Triton smart ankle can sync to a mobile app on users' smart phones, allowing for real-time feedback and adjustments from both the user and prosthetist. Other attributes include:

- The ability to adjust 50 times per second in real time.
- A 34-degree range of motion, allowing the user to navigate a variety of terrains, including inclines and declines.
- An adjustable heel for up to a two-inch heel height, allowing users the freedom to wear the type of shoes they would like, including boot and heels.

During the development of the Triton smart ankle, the manufacturer of this mechatronic technology, Ottobock, partnered with Hanger Clinic for the clinical evaluation, application and testing. The technology is currently available exclusively to Hanger Clinic.
