Chasing herring into international zone soon

'Things change quickly. A few days ago there was heavy fishing, and now it's not going so well. But there are reports of some excellent fishing on Atlanto-Scandian herring in the Herring Loophole and sooner or later we will probably have to follow the herring there before the season ends,' said Víkingur's skipper Hjalti Einarsson.

Víkingur left Vopnafjörður on Monday morning after having docked there before the weekend with around 1000 tonnes of Atlanto-Scandian herring on board for HB Grandi's pelagic fish processing factory. According to Hjalti Einarsson, four or five pelagic vessels have been fishing on the outer edge of Héraðsflói while others have headed for the Herring Loophole.

'We have been in the Héraðsflói Deep and now we're further north off the Borgarfjörður Shallows, where we're searching for herring. We have been aware of small amounts hard on the bottom but no large amounts. Normally fishing for herring is good towards dusk, but the fishing last night was poor,' he said, estimating that yesterday afternoon's catch was around 260 tonnes.

'We'll certainly finish the season in the Herring Loophole, but we're not in a hurry to go out there. It's a long steam and the forecast is for a storm next weekend. On the other hand, the herring in the Herring Loophole is very good and we can say the same about the herring we have been catching in the Héraðsflói Deep when the fishing was at its best a few days ago. It seems that the smaller herring are keeping further south off the Eastfjords although we occasionally come across mixed size herring,' Hjalti Einarsson said.
