Good saithe trip for Helga María

'It all worked out very well. We were lucky with weather and we finished the trip with a good catch. The saithe were there for and we also have some other species such as cod and redfish. Then we were in the Víkuráll Gully and took our redfish allocation, plus some saithe,' said Heimir Guðbjörnsson, skipper of HB Grandi's Helga María, when we spoke to him today with the trawler in a position off Dýrafjörður and on its way to dock in Reykjavík with 170 tonnes on board.

'We started the trip at the top of the Skerja Deeps and had some saithe there. Next we were on the Mountains for some saithe mixed with redfish. From there we followed the bank north-eastwards and did well on cod,' he said, adding that it was when they were further north at the corner of the Thveráll Gully that fishing for saithe really picked up.

'We had some excellent fishing for saithe in the Thveráll Gully yesterday and during the night it was clean saithe. This is all fine quality saithe at around two kilos each, and it wasn't until this morning that we started to see some cod again. It wasn't that much, but just enough for the roughly four tonnes we needed to fill to meet the cod allocation for the trip,' he said.

He commented that there is capelin to be seen everywhere on the Westfjords fishing grounds. Capelin is either snagged in the meshes of the trawl, or in the fish caught on these fishing grounds.

Heimir Guðbjörnsson said that he expects to be in Reykjavík late tonight, with landing scheduled to start at six in the morning. Once that is done, Helga María will be ready to be back at sea at midday on Friday.
