Patchy fishing on blue whiting

Venus docked in Vopnafjörður at the beginning of the week with around 2300 tonnes of blue whiting for processing at HB Grandi's fishmeal factory. We talked to skipper Róbert Axelsson when Venus was back on the fishing grounds, a 30-hour steam from Vopnafjörður.

'We're fishing east of the Faroes close to the Faroese-Norwegian line. There is a number of fishing vessels here, and as well as the Icelandic pelagic boats there are Faroese and Russians. Fishing is quiet now, although there was good fishing two days ago. That's the way blue whiting is - fishing can be patchy.,' he said.

There has been good fishing on blue whiting all through May, with most of the fleet working in the Drain south-west of the Faroe Islands.

'The fishing has dropped way, but there are still a few chasing blue whiting west of the Faroes. Here on the eastern side the fishing also seems to be slowing down at the moment, but that doesn't mean it couldn't pick up tomorrow or at the weekend,' Róbert Axelsson said, adding that the situation is much the same as it was a year ago.

'Fishing slowed down towards the end of May and picked up once we were back at sea after Seamen's Day,' he said.
