Smart containers for waste sorting

The first smart container became a reality at the end of 2017 in Kistan, HB Grandi's waste sorting station in Akranes. The smart container records real-time information on waste sorting in the company and sends the information electronically to the company's environmental database. The container sends a daily report containing information on received volumes defined into types of waste and origin as well as sends notification when the container is full.

The Development Department of Íslenska Gámafélagið has had ideas on its drawing board for technological solutions regarding the setup and recording of raw materials and waste. The fundamental idea of a smart container is to record, in real time, the recycling of raw materials and waste which is in accordance with the sorting and environmental goals of companies. The smart solution is tailored to the needs of each company. Access controls are used in cases where many departments use the same container, either through card solutions and/or the entry of access codes. In the case of HB Grandi, specially trained employees work under good conditions at the waste sorting stations of the company.

'HB Grandi began one of the most ambitious sorting and environmental operations that we at Íslenska Gámafélagið have seen in Iceland. The start of all this was the company's waste sorting in Vopnafjörður about eight years ago. When seeking assistance from Íslenska Gámafélagið, HB Grandi used this pioneering work as a guiding light in the adoption of sorting and recycling waste in the other operating stations of the company,' says Jörgen Þór Þráinsson at Íslenska Gámafélagið.

The next smart container will be brought into use in Vopnafjörður over the next few days. Work has begun on the adoption, installation of equipment, testing and training. In February, there are plans to finish the installation of the third smart container in Svanurinn, the sorting station of HB Grandi in Reykjavík.
