Vopnafjörður factory ready for mackerel season

'We took delivery of some mackerel last week, mixed with herring, and we have tuned all of the machines. Yesterday we had a landing of 600 tonnes of mackerel and that fish is being processed now,' said Magnús Róbertsson, factory manager at HB Grandi's Vopnafjörður location when we spoke to him Yesterday afternoon.

Venus had sailed and the factory was processing Víkingur's catch.

'In fact, we had expected the season would start earlier, but we don't have any say over how the fish behave. I understand the main fishing is south of the Westmann Islands at the moment. A few pelagic boats are fishing there and that's where Venus is heading,' he said, and commented that HB Grandi's groundfish production in Vopnafjörður will be suspended for the as long as the mackerel and herring seasons last.

'Groundfish production has gone very well, but all of the staff have switched over to pelagic production,' Magnús Róbertsson said.
