By Heijmans, under contract to the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), will be reinforcing and renovating the Kreekrak bridges across the Scheldt-Rhine Canal (A58 motorway near Rilland). The objective is to ensure a lifespan of at least 30 years for the bridges after the project has been completed. The contract is valued at over ? 20 million.
The Kreekrak bridges consist of 2 steel and 2 concrete bridges. The Heijmans Road Building and Civil Engineering disciplines are involved in this integral contract. Furthermore, various specialisms will be used, for example for jacking up the pillars and applying high strength concrete as a covering layer.
The contract was in part awarded on the basis of Economically Most Advantageous Tender (EMAT) criteria. Executing the work with the least possible disruption to road and waterway users has priority in this respect. The quality of the action plan also counted heavily in the evaluation of the tender. Heijmans has been managing and maintaining the national trunk roads in the Province of Zeeland for Rijkswaterstaat for the past 6 years; the expertise developed as part of this work was used in developing the action plan. The contract is part of a framework contract for a total of 8 steel bridge renovation projects. Heijmans is one of three parties selected for this framework contract.
