The winners in the new U.S. energy utility landscape will be those that can adapt to change, according to a new white paper authored by renowned business executive and former Group Chief Executive of Centrica plc, Sir Roy Gardner, in partnership with HomeServe USA (HomeServe), a leading provider of home emergency repair service plans.

The white paper, “Navigating U.S. Energy Shifts – Lessons Learned from the Deregulation of British Gas,” examines some of the changes and opportunities facing energy utilities in the U.S. as regulatory and environmental pressures mount. Drawing direct parallels between the current transitional period in the U.S. and the prior transformation of the energy industry following deregulation in the UK, the white paper uses British Gas, the largest energy and home services company in Britain today, as a case study for successfully managing through continuous change.

Reflecting on his firsthand experience as CEO of Centrica plc, the parent company of British Gas, during a similar tumultuous period in that company’s history, Sir Gardner shares strategic learnings related to growing British Gas’s home services division, which provides residential customers with maintenance and repair services, from an insignificant piece of its business to a fully supported division. The program was immensely successful from a financial perspective, and it served as a competitive differentiator and valuable customer retention tool. The case study provides a strategic example for how U.S. energy utilities can diversify their revenue streams, set themselves apart from their competitors, and establish their position as the number one trusted advisor in their market segment.

In conjunction with the white paper, HomeServe has launched a new website, www.HomeServeEnergyInsider.com, where utility executives and other interested parties can obtain a copy of the white paper and learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the energy industry today and how they can replicate the British Gas model for success.
