  • In this regard, IBERDROLA believes that cooperation between companies and political leaders is crucial, as well as the efforts of the private sector to decarbonise the economy

IBERDROLA, world leader in renewable energies and a pioneer in combating climate change, joined the CEO Climate Leadership Group today. Its first meeting was held this afternoon as part of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The meeting was inaugurated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon. The company undertook to work along with the other member companies in 2015 to limit global warming to 2ºC and provide real, tangible solutions to make progress on combating climate change.

The CEO Climate Leadership Group features the participation of major international companies operating in the sectors of energy, technology, pharmaceuticals, finance or consumer goods, for example.

To be more specific, IBERDROLA took part in a round-table discussion along with former Vice-President of the United States Al Gore to analyse opportunities for adopting and promoting transformation technologies that contribute towards sustainability.

In this regard, IBERDROLA and its fellow members in the Group are convinced of the importance of cooperation between companies and political leaders, as well as the efforts of the private sector to decarbonise the economy. This will help boost the fight against climate change and help to secure a serious commitment from the leaders that will be meeting at the next Climate Summit, to be held in Paris in December of this year.  The fact is that an increasing number of companies now believe that sustainable growth that is compatible with the climate is the only feasible alternative for the growth of economies worldwide.

Committed to combating climate change

IBERDROLA once again ratified the unwavering commitment to combating climate change it undertook during the Climate Change Summit organised by the UN and held in New York in September of last year. On that occasion, the company endorsed the goals set by the international organisation Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) via its  Road to Paris 2015 initiative, which aims to ensure that more ambitious and binding measures will be taken by States at the Climate Summit scheduled to take place in the French capital.

The company also committed to promoting responsible corporate policies on climate issues on a continuous basis. In 2009, IBERDROLA was one of the first companies to approve a Corporate Policy on Combating Climate Change.External link, opens in new window.

Under the terms of this policy, the Group has also confirmed its effort to promote support for the international agreements needed to address this environmental problem; foster the development of technologies that are efficient in terms of greenhouse gas emissions; encourage efficient use of energy and raise awareness of responsible energy consumption among its customers.

In achieving these goals, IBERDROLA will be guided by a number of basic principles, which include taking the lead as regards recommendations in international agreements for the electricity sector; promoting enhanced performance in distribution networks; backing a corporate culture focused on efficient use of energy or taking part in forums and implementing best practices that help to combat climate change.

The company is continuing with its firm commitment to the use of the most environmentally-friendly technology for generating electricity, especially renewable energies and more specifically, wind power, in a bid to go on being one of the companies with the lowest CO2 emissions in the electricity sector. The specific goal it has set itself is for its emissions to be at least 20% lower than the average for the European sector in 2020.

IBERDROLA reduced its CO2 emissions worldwide by 4.5% in the first nine months of 2014, dropping from 220 grams per kilowatt hour (kWh) in 2013 to 210 grams per kWh last year. 62% of its installed capacity was emissions-free at the end of September.
