• The company was also recently included in the Dow Jones Sustainability and the FTSE4Good indices
  • The company has been commended both for its initiatives in combating climate change and for the transparency of its communication on this matter

IBERDROLA was included today in the 2014 editions of the  Climate Performance Leadership and Climate Disclosure Leadership sustainability indices by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), which acknowledge its strategy in combating climate change and its communication policies in this regard, respectively.

IBERDROLA is one of the 187 firms that were selected from a sample of almost 2,000 listed companies for inclusion in what is known as the 'A-list' of the Climate Performance Leadership Index, i.e. the companies that have demonstrated the greatest efforts in combating climate change.

It should be noted that the investments made mean that the names on this list managed to jointly reduce their emissions by 33 million metric tonnes in 2013.  They did so while achieving good economic results, which proves that their commitment to the environment does not imply any drop in profits.

On the other hand, IBERDROLA was also acknowledged as a leader in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index, also announced today, for the quality and quantity of information linked to combating climate change that it discloses to its investors and the markets in general via the CDP tools.

As well as having been added to these benchmark indices, IBERDROLA has also received two other important acknowledgements in the last few days: its ongoing inclusion, for the fifteenth year in a row, in the 2014 Dow Jones Sustainability index (making it the only European utility to have been featured in this index since its inception); and its inclusion, for the fifth year in a row, in the FTSE4Good 2014 ranking (it was the first utility in the world with nuclear assets to be added to this ranking in the year 2010).

The DJSI acknowledged the company for its policies focusing on combating climate change, protecting biodiversity, involvement with stakeholders and promoting innovation and eco-efficiency, as well as other goals. The company has also once again been ranked among the eight most sustainable electric utilities in the world because of its strategic approach based on international growth and the development of renewable energies, a sector in which it is now the leader, with an installed capacity of over 14,600 MW.

It was included in the FTSE4Good index on the basis of its indicators linked to climate change, pollution and resources, water, biodiversity and environmental aspects of the supply chain. On the other hand, it was also commended for its excellent performance in relation to work standards, human rights, safety and health, responsibility towards its customers and social aspects of the supply chain. Finally, the company also met the organisation's requirements as regards corporate governance, risk management, anti-corruption mechanisms and transparency in taxation.

Commitment to sustainability

The Board of Directors of IBERDROLA approved its Sustainability Policy in December of last year, thereby ratifying and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development in all of its operations. This means that the company has integrated the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainability into all of its activities in the energy sector.

The energy sector is currently poised for change. The IBERDROLA Group wishes to lead this transformation, while offering increasingly competitive energy products with the lowest possible environmental impact and guaranteeing a reliable supply to its customers.

The company remains firmly committed to using the most environmentally-friendly technology for generating electricity, in a bid to become one of the companies with the lowest CO2 emissions in the electricity sector.

In this regard, IBERDROLA reduced its CO2 emissions worldwide by 4.5% in the first nine months of this year, dropping from 220 grams per kilowatt hour (kWh) in 2013 to 210 grams per kWh. In Spain, the emissions recorded by the Group totalled 55 grams  CO2 per kWh, compared to 59 grams per kWh in the same months of the previous year. This is equivalent to a 6.8% drop in emissions.

IBERDROLA also ended the month of September 2014 with 57% of total output and 62% of installed capacity CO2 emissions-free. In the case of Spain, these figures stood at 91% and 72%, respectively.
