Boeing Assigned Patent for Collision Prevention in Robotic Manufacturing Environments

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 3 -- Boeing, Chicago, Illinois, has been assigned a patent (9,855,661) developed by Jerald A. Hull, Charleston, South Carolina, for "collision prevention in robotic manufacturing environments." The abstract states: "Systems and methods are provided for collision prevention One embodiment is an apparatus that includes a robot. The robot includes an end effector that operates within a manufacturing cell, and actuators defining a kinematic chain that reorients the end effector within the manufacturing cell. The robot also includes an imaging system mounted with the end effector, and a controller. The controller is able to direct the actuators to orient the imaging system towards the mirror, to acquire a point cloud of 3D positions by operating the imaging system to scan an image in the mirror, and to revise the 3D positions in the point cloud by folding the 3D positions about a surface defined by the mirror. The robot is also able to determine a volume occupied by the robot within the manufacturing cell, and to direct the robot to operate based on the volume to prevent collisions."

The patent application was filed on March 29, 2016 (15/084,107). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=9,855,661.PN.&OS=PN/9,855,661&RS=PN/9,855,661

The co-inventors are Robert C. Beesley, Greenville, South Carolina, J. Mark Nunn, Simpsonville, South Carolina, and Doug A. Imes, Greer, South Carolina. The abstract states: "An apparatus for diverting a stream of articles that includes an input conveyor belt conveying a stream of articles in a direction of travel and at an input speed and an output conveyor belt operating at an output speed and disposed parallel with the input conveyor belt in the same direction of travel. A diverter element extending along the input conveyor belt and is moveable between the direction of travel and an opposite direction wherein the diverter element operates in one of two modes of operation depending upon the input speed and the output speed."

The patent application was filed on Oct. 12, 2016 (15/291,637). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=9,856,093.PN.&OS=PN/9,856,093&RS=PN/9,856,093

Amsted Rail Assigned Patent for Braking Systems for Railway Cars

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 3 -- Amsted Rail, Chicago, Illinois, has been assigned a patent (9,855,960) developed by Jonathan Sunde, Greenville, South Carolina, for "braking systems for railway cars." The abstract states: "Braking systems for railway cars are provided. A braking system defines a longitudinal axis, and includes a first brake assembly, a second brake assembly, and an actuator operable to generate a linear force, the actuator disposed proximate the second brake assembly. The braking system further includes a movable rod and a fixed rod extending between the first brake assembly and the second brake assembly. In some embodiments, the braking system further includes a dead lever and a slack adjuster disposed proximate the first brake assembly, the slack adjuster connected to the first brake assembly and the dead lever and operable to adjust a distance along the longitudinal axis between a reference point of the first brake assembly and a pivot point of the dead lever."

The patent application was filed on May 23, 2016 (15/161,507). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=9,855,960.PN.&OS=PN/9,855,960&RS=PN/9,855,960

Illinois Tool Works Assigned Patent Continuous Motion Article Arranging Systems

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 3 -- Illinois Tool Works, Glenview, Illinois, has been assigned a patent (9,856,092) developed by five co-inventors for "continuous motion article arranging systems and methods." The co-inventors are Matthew A. Job, Greenville, South Carolina, Craig Kirkpatrick, Simpsonville, South Carolina, Christopher Ray, Greer, South Carolina, Roger Johnston, Glenview, Illinois, and Brett A. Stripe, Piedmont, South Carolina. The abstract states: "A system, method and an end effector may arrange into a group two articles within a stream of articles moving spaced apart and in a line in a conveying direction on a conveyor. The system, method, and end effector may contact and slow the more downstream of the two articles and then contact the more upstream of the two articles without substantially slowing the more upstream article to form the group. The end effector may include a downstream stop portion for contacting at least one of the articles."

The patent application was filed on Nov. 19, 2015 (14/945,737). The full-text of the patent can be found at http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=9,856,092.PN.&OS=PN/9,856,092&RS=PN/9,856,092

Illinois Tool Works Assigned Patent for Conveyor Belt, Platform

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 3 -- Illinois Tool Works, Glenview, Illinois, has been assigned a patent (9,856,087) developed by Robert C. Beesley, Greenville, South Carolina, for a "conveyor belt and platform for conveyor belt." The abstract states: "A surface platform for a conveyor belt includes a platform member having an upper surface and a rail member at one side of the upper surface. The upper surface has a first portion adjacent the rail member, a second portion adjacent the first portion, and a third portion adjacent the second portion. The second portion extends upward at a distance and in a direction such that when an article is placed on the platform member in contact with the rail the article extends to, and no further than, the second portion. The first portion may be horizontal or curved."
