Georgia Cyber Academy (GCA) is proud to announce that Senior Malik Saafir has been selected by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, as a Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) student. The program honors only the most high-achieving students in the state of Georgia.

Saafir is the son of Afua and Talib Saafir of Snellville, GA. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the National Senior Beta Club and is a University of Georgia Certificate of Merit Recipient. Saafir is also a dual enrollment, Move On When Ready (MOWR) student with Gwinnett Technical College, is active on two robotic teams and volunteers with the Fernbank Museum. He has been accepted to Morehouse College for the fall of 2017 and plans to major in chemical engineering and computer science.

To be nominated as a STAR student, a high school senior must have the highest three-part SAT score based on one test taken during or before the November test date of their senior year. Additionally, the student must be in the top 10 percent or a top ten student in his or her class. During the past 59 years, the STAR student program has honored more than 26,000 high school seniors.

“We are thrilled for Malik! He’s a hard-working student who is going to achieve great things,” said Matt Arkin, Head of School at Georgia Cyber Academy. “He’s also a great example of the rigorous education and high level of success that can be achieved in a virtual setting.”

Saafir selected Denice Delk, his AP® Calculus teacher at Georgia Cyber Academy, as his STAR Teacher – i.e., the teacher most instrumental in his academic development. Together, they will be honored at the region’s STAR luncheon, on March 17, 2017 at The Georgian Club in Atlanta, where school officials, civic organizations, and businesses will gather to recognize the winners.
