Wyoming Virtual Academy (WYVA), an accredited online public school for students across the state, will celebrate the Class of 2017 with an in-person graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at Niobrara County High School.

Thirty-six high school seniors will graduate from WYVA, which provides an individualized educational experience that includes small-group instruction opportunities, one-on-one teacher interaction and a rigorous and engaging curriculum.

“We are so proud of each of our graduates,” said Jeff Verosky, head of school at Wyoming Virtual Academy. “We love being able to celebrate the many accomplishments of our students with their friends and family.”

Chase Patrick-Lynn Hillstead is the valedictorian of the Class of 2017, and Abbigail Nelson is the salutatorian. Janae Poage, a WYVA teacher and its liaison to Eastern Wyoming College, will deliver remarks to the graduating class, and WYVA teachers and staff will be in attendance to recognize the students’ achievements.

The Class of 2017 has been offered more than $117,000 in college scholarships. The graduates report that they have been accepted to a number of colleges and universities, including the University of Wyoming, Washington State University, Florida Polytechnic University, Rocky Mountain College, Eastern Wyoming College, Northwestern Community College, Laramie County Community College and Animal Behavior College.

WYVA’s students have built strong relationships with their classmates during their time with the school. They interact with each other through their virtual classrooms, as well as discussion threads and instant messaging. In addition, WYVA offers regularly scheduled regional educational field trips and social outings throughout the school year, and graduation allows the students to celebrate their accomplishment together.
