? KT-SB data service, a joint venture between KT and Soft
Bank Telecom, officially launched
? Data Center to offer full-scale service after pilot
program is operated by year's end
? Global market entry to expand based on service operation
experience in Japan
A meaningful event to announce the entry of Korea's
cloud services into global markets was held in a building
about 30 min away from Gimhae International Airport and
about 4km away from Gimhae City Hall.
KT G&E Division Head and President Lee Sang-hoon, SB CISO
and Executive Director Ata Shinichi, KSDA CEO Jang
Hyuk-gyun, Gimhae CEO Kim Maeong Gon and National
Assemblyman Kim Tae-ho and others attended the KSDS'
Data Center opening ceremony.
? Launch of a joint venture, KT-SB data service
KSDS completed their business registration in November 2011
with KRW 37 billion of capital (KT: 51% and SBT: 49% in
stake), as scheduled. Also, Jang Hyeok-gyun, who was
the CEO of KT Japan, and Ishioka Yukinori were elected as
CEO and Co-CEO, respectively.
The joint venture, headquartered in Gimhae Data Center,
will be in charge of center management and service
operations, and plans to support consulting in the Japanese
language for smooth service assistance for Japanese
customers.
? After the system completion of the Global Data Center by
the year's end, the full-blown service will be
implanted in the first half of next year
The data center, showing itself in four months since its
construction commencement in August 2011, has been
remodeled based on the existing KT Gimhae Training
Center's Welfare Center. The data center was built with
a capacity of 7,000 Kw (some 700 racks) in the first phase.
In consideration of the business activation, 13,000
additional Kw (some 1,000 racks) are planned to be expanded
in the second phase by additionally injecting KRW 48
billion.
Within the center, is a basic system control room, server
room, power room and climate control room, and the office
environment is offered in such as way that Japanese
companies moving into the center can directly operate
services and carry out business.
The center has a dual service power system through Samgye
Substation and Eobang Substation to secure superb power
stability. Although the power supply is cut off from the
substations, the center can be operated for more than 24
hours with its own power generating facilities and an
additional oil supply method has also been established.
The cutting-edge climate control mode and cooling
technologies adopted by Cheonan Cloud Data Center were also
reflected in the center. Especially, various reinforcement
procedures have been made such as fixing all equipment
racks in the building rather than just setting them all up,
through a long-term consultation with a Japanese partner
regarding an earthquake-resistant design in the initial
stages of the center's establishment.
The test run of the systems of the data center will be
conducted by the year's end, and the service will
formally begin next year. The service is scheduled to be
offered in full-scale before July 2012, which is the
enforcement period of the power use restriction ordinance
within Japan.
The preparation of a 10G class large capacity private line
has been finished for network configuration between Korea
and Japan. The service is scheduled to be offered mainly
using a seabed optical cable set up between Busan and
Kitakyushu, which is operated by KT and SB.
? Full-blown entry into global markets, based on service
experience for Japanese companies
Since a conference in Japan in May 2011, about 200
businesses within Japan have shown interest in the data
center service of KSDS within Japan and consulting is
underway. Some of them are predicted to use actual services
from the first half of next year after due diligence,
according to the data center opening.
Starting with co-location and a server rental service, KSDA
plans to operate a cloud-relevant infrastructure rental
(IaaS) and platform rental (PaaS) services. KSDA plans to
combine the currently operated services by KT within the
various requirements of Japanese firms.
KT plans to offer all these services to Japanese markets
through KSDS and expand service cooperation with overseas
communications providers in Europe, as well as those in
Asia, based on the accumulated experience.
KSDS CEO Jang Hyeok-gyun said, "We concentrated
all our capabilities on the data center establishment for
the past six months in order to provide a prompt
service." And he announced, "We will provide
optimal services to Japanese companies by using the service
capabilities of KT and SB."
KT G&E Division Head and President Lee Sang-hoon said,
"We launched the data center service, focusing on the
Gimhae Global Data Center as a part of KT's global
service expansion plan."
"Based on the service experience within Japan, we
expect to find positive effects on the global market entry
and the attraction of global companies to use the domestic
data center," he added.
SB Executive Director Ata Shinichi explained,
"Many companies within Japan have huge expectations on
the service now, and SB is also reviewing a plan to
relocate some of our systems to Gimhae before the
enforcement of the power restriction ordinance next
year."
