Sydney, 17 November 2015: Lendlease was announced last week as the winner of the Building, Landscapes and Infrastructure Banksia Award for Barangaroo Reserve.

The six hectare park was constructed by Lendlease's Engineering business, on behalfof the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, and involved the recreation of a naturalisticheadland designed to mimic the pre-1836 shoreline on the western edge of Sydney'sCentral Business District.

Brian Gillon, Acting Managing Director of Lendlease's Engineering business, commended the project team for their passion and commitment to transforming theformer container terminal into a sprawling green space.

'Winning such a prestigious national award is great recognition of the many industryfirsts pioneered by the project team to design and construct a park that sets newbenchmarks for sustainable reuse of materials, water reuse and remediation,' said MrGillon.

Among the park's most outstanding sustainability achievements:

  • In total, 98 per cent of excavated fill material, or 200,000m3, has been reusedwithin the park. This volume sets a new precedent in materials reuse, saving upto 60,000 truck movements through the centre of Sydney.
  • Over 10,000 sandstone blocks have been used for the sandstone foreshore andthroughout the park. Ninety three per cent of this sandstone was sourced fromthe site's extraction pit, beneath the underground carpark of the Cutawaycultural space.
  • Beyond its original purpose as an extraction pit, the space beneath theunderground carpark also served as the final location for the state-of-the-artintegrated water re-use system, which captures, treats, stores and re-usesseepage and storm water for irrigation of the park.
  • Two tanks - an enormous 1,200m3 rainwater tank and 180m3 seepage tank -located underneath the carpark will irrigate Barangaroo Reserve during andbeyond the park's 100 year design life.
  • A special soil containing crushed sandstone from unused blocks and recycledwaste was especially manufactured for the park to replicate the sandy texture ofthe original headland, allowing plants that had once naturally flourished there toagain fix their roots.
  • The remarkable planting program, comprising 675 trees, 2,200 shrubs and75,000 plants all native to Sydney, has been hugely successful with a failurerate of less than 1 per cent.

The Banksia Sustainability Awards are regarded as the most prestigious and longestrunning sustainability awards in Australia. Barangaroo Reserve was chosen from anesteemed field of four finalists including Regional Rail Link, Canberra Airport andBairnsdale Library by NOWarchitecture.
